I foresee a science fair project in Thomas' future. If you want to test how something - a circuit breaker, an airplane - behaves when struck by lightning, you create very high voltages with something called a Marx Impulse Generator and then you apply that voltage to a humongous capacitor. When the voltage is high enough, the air in the middle of the capacitor will ionize and lightning will strike. You place the equipment under test in the path of the lightning. The big toroid at the top of the insulating column is one side of the capacitor.
