Some understanding can only be achieved via emotive experience of the whole.
O
Horizon separates earth and sky, shoreline divides land and sea, light differentiates night and day, the Manai’a individuates.
Some understanding can only be achieved via rational reductionism.
÷
The Manai’a has foot, fin, and feather to explore land, sea, and sky; heart to feel; and mind to deconstruct.

Cimarrón Progress
The transfer case support had to be moved and reinforced and armor plated. The exhaust is routed and the muffler installed. The nerf bars have been welded to the frame and reinforced with gussets and brackets. The rectangular piece in the lower right slides into any of four slots in the nerf bars to jack up a wheel with a hi-lift jack.

This Morning in Elko
The weather is getting in the way of my training. I don't know how people train through the winter in high country. The dogs and I are huddled in front of a heater.

East Indian Sounds and Smells
My neighbors don't know what to make of me. On this particular Monday night, in a 1978 Airstream trailer, in a RV park in Elko, Nevada:
Zakir Hussain, Shivkumar Sharma, John McLaughlin on the stereo to set the mood.
Boil 10 cups water, 2 cups mung beans
After 20 minutes, add 1 cup brown rice
After 30 minutes, add:
2 medium white onions, chopped
1 entire bulb of garlic, chopped
6 roma tomatoes, chopped
6 serrano chile peppers, chopped
1 heaping Tablespoon of garam masala
1 heaping Tablespoon of ground coriander
1 heaping Tablespoon of ground curry powder
1 Tablespoon of ground cayenne pepper
2 Tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper.
After 40 minutes, turn off heat and add 6 tablespoons of tamari.
Let stand for 10-30 minutes.
Serve in a big bowl and top with chopped fresh avocado and maybe chopped green onion and fresh cilantro if you are so inclined.

Exploring Elko
Rode my mountain bike in the hills behind Elko today. The climb was right at my aerobic limit. I couldn't go faster because my heart and lungs were tapped out and I couldn't go slower because I would fall over. This is near the top, looking south at the Ruby Mountains:
I was checking out the hills for a possible paraglider launch and I think I found a pretty good launch and LZ. Here's what you can do with a Blackberry propped up on a rock:
The route down was absolutely nuts - straight down the side of a mountain. I lowered my seat as low as it would go and hung my butt as far back as possible. I unclipped my right foot and held my right leg behind the bike to put more weight to the rear and laid on my belly on the saddle. It must have looked pretty funny, though I was quite afraid.
So I found a possible place to fly, but todays ride was also instructive. I was quite dehydrated - It's cooler here than I am used to, so I don't drink plus I ran 8 miles earlier - and I need a new saddle for my mountain bike. At the end of my ride, I was quite uncomfortable and having prostate issues and a terrible headache.

The Mind of Dog
I am giving up the practice of Zen and taking up the study of Dog. Dogs know how to live.
